Lil Wayne shoots down near-death report: 'I'm good everybody'

Lil Wayne in Febrary 2013 [Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images]

Lil Wayne had a seizure. He is hospitalized in Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. But as for the bombshell TMZ report that claimed the 30-year-old rap star was near-death, surrounded by family, and on the verge of receiving last rites? Not true, according to Team Weezy.

Around 6:30pm PT, a tweet was sent out from Lil Wayne's Twitter:

Yahoo! cannot confirm if the tweet was from Wayne himself; sources close to the rapper have told omg! Insider conflicting information about the rapper's current state and whether he is alert or in a medically induced coma.

However, Mack Maine, president of Weezy's Young Money Entertainment, tweeted out that TMZ's report was completely false.

TMZ, meanwhile, has backed off its report that rocked the Internet this afternoon insisting Wayne was being taken off life support and didn't have long to live. "Sources at the hospital tell us Wayne is still in critical condition in the ICU ... but stabilizing. We're told the prognosis is uncertain," the website wrote in an update.

Already the gossip site is getting backlash for exaggerating the story. Aside from the aforementioned tweets, the rapper's rep, Sarah Cunningham, said that Wayne is recovering.

According to TMZ's initial report, Wayne was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday due to multiple seizures, then released the next morning, only to be found unconscious by his bodyguards.

This isn't the first time that Lil Wayne had suffered from seizures. While traveling by private jet in October, Wayne suffered from seizure-like symptoms forcing an emergency landing.

More as it happens.

'The Call' Reviews, Bon Jovi's 'What About Now,' Hurts' 'Exile ...

Bon Jovi made a lackluster return this week with their 12th studio album "What About Now." Though the album sticks close to a familiar sound for the group, it lacked the focus and energy of their previous projects. Eric Clapton's "Old Sock" was praised for its soothing tracks, but the jump in genres was a bit jarring for some reviewers. Rachel Zeffira's "The Deserters" was marked as a little boring at times and Hurts' "Exile" debuted to fairly mixed reviews with it's greatest praise coming from the slick production of the album's tracks.

In movies, "The Call" fell victim to a ridiculous, unbelievable plot that derailed the film early on and most critics agreed "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" was a silly and painfully unfunny waste of time. "Spring Breakers" received some of the strongest movie reviews this week but some critics felt the film was just a mashup of the same material. Finally, the narrative of "Upside Down" failed to match its beautifully shot scenes resulting in a gorgeous film that lacked substance.

As always we have gathered the worst reviews in the slideshow below. Did you think "Spring Breakers" was really that terrible? Did you actually enjoy Bon Jovi's new album? Let us know in the comments section below.

  • "Exile" - Hurts

The album didn't win The Independent over. <blockquote><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/album-review-hurts-exile-rca-8525374.html" target="_blank">"Innovation, clearly, is not the highest of their priorities. In truth, everything comes a distant second to style."</a></blockquote>

  • "What About Now" - Bon Jovi

There isn't too much substance to the album, says the Boston Globe. <blockquote><a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/music/2013/03/10/album-review-bon-jovi-what-about-now/5DF5Uaz21IvRAhIiNAwejO/story.html" target="_blank">"The best way to enjoy What About Now is to not listen too closely, ignore the clumsy lyrics ("I feel just like Picasso, and you're my masterpiece"), and ignore that it's watered down U2 flirting with pop-country."</a></blockquote>

  • "Old Sock" - Eric Clapton

The album was easy to listen to but did't offer anything new according to Exclaim. <blockquote><a href="http://exclaim.ca/Reviews/FolkAndCountry/eric_clapton-old_sock" target="_blank">"Old Sock [is] a pleasant, but ultimately uninspired collection that ranges from country and folk standards such as 'Born to Lose' and "Goodnight Irene" to the classic jazz of "All Of Me" and 'Our Love is Here to Stay.'"</a></blockquote>

  • "The Deserters" - Rachel Zeffira

The album toes the line of boring and quietly commanding, says The Guardian. <blockquote><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jan/03/rachel-zeffira-the-deserters-review" target="_blank">"Now and then she mistakes bland tastefulness for classy restraint; otherwise, subtlety is The Deserters' chief charm." </blockquote></a>

  • "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone"

The movie is a waste of time, says Tony Medley. <blockquote><a href="http://www.tonymedley.com/2013/Incredible_Burt_Wonderstone.htm" target="_blank">"The only magic in this ridiculous, irresponsible movie is that it actually got made and distributed." </blockquote></a>

  • "The Call"

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence should stay clear of the movie, says ReelViews. <blockquote><a href="http://www.reelviews.net/php_review_template.php?identifier=2596" target="_blank">"This is as brain-dead as a movie can be and it assumes the audience will have the I.Q. of a rutabaga." </blockquote></a>

  • "Spring Breakers"

The movie's scenes seemed to be on repeat according to the New York Post. <blockquote><a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/movies/girls_gone_reviled_lTSxzHlGgsWVHdvdwaPbNI" target="_blank">"Basically a "Girls Gone Wild'' short artily padded out to feature-length by endlessly repeating the same scenes and lines of dialogue, often three or more times." </blockquote></a>

  • "Upside Down"

The movie was pretty but that is about it, says Kyle Smith. <blockquote><a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/movies/dunst_lands_in_dud_LErcq7ClIjUpnX2Qxl7noN" target="_blank">"Upside Down" is such a gorgeous wreck that I could almost sense Terry Gilliam somewhere muttering, "Wait a minute, I should have been the one to screw up this idea." </blockquote></a>

Updated water wheels power India's rural mountain economy

Wooden water wheels have long captured energy from mountain streams. New versions work even better, helping provide a local, sustainable source of energy to Indian villages high in the Himalayas.

By Sujit Chakraborty and Archita Bhatta,?AlertNet / March 15, 2013

A water wheel with steel blades operates in northern India's Himalayan Uttarakhand state. The energy it produces grinds grain, presses oil, and generates electricity for a remote village in the Himalayas.

Living in an isolated Himalayan hamlet, 2,500 meters (5,600 feet) above sea level, Govind Singh Rana seems an unlikely candidate for wealth. But by the standards of other villagers in northern India?s Uttarakhand state, he earns a fortune by harnessing the power of the mountain stream that runs across his land.

Rana uses a water-powered turbine to run a saw mill, press apricot oil in season, and generate electricity, at little cost to himself and without the need for environmentally unfriendly power sources like diesel generators.

He is one of 28,000 people in Uttaranchal who have discovered the advantages of a modern incarnation of the traditional wooden water wheel, or gharat. The turbines, which harness hydro power for small-scale industry by day and for generating electricity by night, have brought an ecologically sustainable economic revolution to the Himalayan states of Uttaranchal, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh, as well as the so-called Seven Sister states in India?s northeastern Himalayas.

During the day, the turbines grind wheat flour and spices, thresh rice, press apricot oil, and comb cotton. At night, the turbines in the first three states alone generate a total of 264 megawatts of electricity per hour, all without burning any of the fossil fuels that could exacerbate the effects of climate change on the Himalayan environment.

Spearheading the sustainable exploitation of mountain resources is Anil Joshi, a former professor of botany. Inspired by the Gandhian philosophy of rural self-sustainability, Joshi launched a grass-roots movement to help Himalayan villagers stop using coal-intensive power and instead turn the region?s thousands of fast-flowing streams into personal mini hydro-electric power stations.

Water wheels are a centuries-old technology in the Himalayas, but one that was becoming obsolete until Joshi and the?Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO), which he founded 29 years ago, taught villagers to develop alternative livelihoods by modernizing the wheels and using them for traditional industry during the day and to provide electric power to as many as 60 village homes per wheel at night. ?

Improving the technology was key to HESCO?s strategy. The old water wheels were inefficient, taking a day to crush around 10 kilos (22 pounds) of wheat. Making a single wheel was a laborious process that required the wood from an entire pine or deodar (Himalayan cedar) tree. And environmental considerations had led to restrictions on tree-felling, which drove up the price of timber to as much as 500,000 rupees ($9,200) for a single tree.

?These factors made the gharats unviable,? Joshi explained. ?And gradually, the system started dying out.?

From a high of around 187,000, the number of water wheels in Uttarkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh over time fell to around 98,000, said Joshi, who has undertaken surveys of mountain villages on foot and by bicycle in numerous states of India?s north and northeast.

?HESCO?s solution was to improve the gharats by fitting them with modern gears and ball bearings.

?This doubled the output,? said Manmohan Singh Negi, a HESCO worker, as he helped three other employees upgrade an old gharat into a modern one at Ghontu Ka Shera, a remote village around 22 km (14 miles) from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand state.

?Today a powerful gharat can turn out about two quintals (80 kilograms) of wheat flour a day, making it a very profitable option for villagers,? Negi added.

The modernization of the technology has continued with the introduction of wheels made of steel. Wooden wheels were liable to break when torrential monsoon rains washed rocks downstream, and repairing the blades was time-consuming and costly.

?In the olden days, when a blade of a wooden turbine would break ... we would need to take the entire turbine out and make a different one, costing time and money,? said Negi.

Using steel instead of wood has made it possible to repair a single broken blade ? and most repairs can be done locally.

?With the new material used, one can simply take off the screws of the single turbine blade and get it welded and repaired locally, at very little cost and time,? he explained.

Originally, gharats were used simply to grind wheat for flour. But the improvements to the wheels gave HESCO an idea.

?It struck us that with this massive availability of water from the streams we can actually generate electricity, and this is what we started to do,? Negi said.

HESCO continues to introduce innovations. At Ghontu Ka Shera, for instance, it has recently constructed its first horizontal turbine, rather than the traditional vertical ones.

?Due to the tremendous force of the hill streams, roughly 15 to 20 percent of the generative capability is lost when the water crashes into the turbine vertically. But in a horizontal turbine, we save that [capacity],? Negi said.

The Ghontu Ka Shera water mill does not simply crush wheat and spices by day and produce electrical power at night. The single horizontal turbine has four conveyor belts attached to separate machines for milling wheat, threshing rice, grinding spices and generating power, though to ensure maximum efficiency only two of the machines will be operated simultaneously.

Each gharat is run by an individual family. The owner of the Ghontu Ka Shera gharat is 45-year-old Kamal Singh Panwar. He will charge villagers up to 1 rupee (around 2 cents) to grind a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of wheat. They would otherwise pay twice as much for the use of a diesel-powered mill in Raipur, the nearest town.

From the 80 to 100 kilograms of wheat Panwar expects to grind each day, he should receive around 12 kg of wheat flour, as well as cash, in remuneration.?Under an agreement, he will give HESCO around 1 kg of flour per day, which the organization will then sell to gradually earn back its 200,000 rupee (about $3,700) investment in the turbine.

Panwar points out that that there are further economic benefits to having his own mill, since he no longer has to pay 80 rupees to take a taxi to and from Raipur to have his wheat ground. And he will earn additional income by handling spices and rice.

For HESCO, the reduction in the carbon footprint from milling wheat is an important aspect of the program. But it is above all a sustainable, environmentally friendly way to revive rural economies.

Panditji, a priest and another gharat owner from Ganeshpur, near the holy town of Uttarkashi, recounted how his son left the village to earn a living working in a town elsewhere in the state. By reviving his gharat for grinding wheat and spices and threshing rice, Panditji now earns an average of 25,000 rupees ($460) every month, making him wealthy by local standards. But for him, the best part is that by improving his economic status he has been able to recall his son back to the village.

? Sujit Chakraborty and Archita Bhatta are science and environmental journalists based in New Delhi.

Both moms and dads stressed out by 'having it all'

Brett Deering for msnbc.com

Dustin Baylor, seen here in 2012 with sons Paxton, left, and Garrison, has struggled to balance his responsibilities as a doctor and a dad. A new Pew study finds that nearly as many dads as moms find it hard to juggle work and family responsibilities.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

The struggle to balance work and family life is stressing out working dads almost as much as it?s stressing out working moms, leaving many parents with young children feeling like they are always rushed.

A new report from Pew Research Center?finds that 56 percent of working moms and 50 percent of working dads with kids under 18 say they find it difficult to balance both their work and their family responsibilities.

That?s leaving many parents feeling like there just aren?t enough hours in the day. The report, based on a survey Pew completed in late 2012, found that 40 percent of working moms and 34 percent of working dads feel like they are always rushed.

The findings come as more moms are taking on the working role that more typically fell to dad a generation or two ago, and more dads are taking on the household responsibilities that mom mostly took on in the 1960s and 1970s.

Meanwhile, women such as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and former State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter are sparking a refreshed debate over how, or if, women can ?have it all.? That's something plenty of dads have told TODAY?they struggle with as well.

One thing seems clear: Most parents want to spend time with their kids, whether they work or not.

Mom and Dad are spending significantly more time on child care than in the 1960s, and yet many dads especially think that it?s still not enough. The Pew data found that 46 percent of dads think they spend too little time with their children, while 23 percent of moms feel the same way.

That may be because, although roles are converging, moms are still spending more time on family and home life, while dads are spending more time at the office.

Pew Research Center

As roles change, everyone is getting stressed out.

According to Pew?s analysis of the Census Bureau?s long-running American Time Use Survey, moms with kids under 18 typically spent 13.5 hours a week on direct child care in 2011, compared to 10.2 hours a week in 1965. Dads spent 7.3 hours a week on child care in 2011, up from 2.5 hours a week in 1965.

The analysis also found that moms with kids under 18 are spending 17.8 hours a week on housework, down from 31.9 hours per week in 1965. Dads are spending 9.8 hours a week on housework, compared with 4.4 hours in 1965.

Not all parents with kids under 18 are working outside the home. But among parents who are employed, moms spend an average of 33 hours at work, dad spend an average of 41.4 hours at work.

The weak economy appears to have prompted more moms to say they would like to work full time, even though few Americans think that is what is best for children.

The Pew survey found that 32 percent of moms with kids under 18 say they would like to work full time, up from 20 percent in 2007, the year the nation went into recession. The nation has officially been in recovery for more than three years, but economic conditions remain challenging and unemployment is still higher than most would like.

Meanwhile, the share of moms who said they don?t want to work at all fell from 29 percent in 2007 to 20 percent when the most recent survey was conducted in late 2012.

Working part time remained the most popular option, with about half of moms saying that?s what they?d like to do best both in 2007 and now.

That?s also the situation that the biggest chunk of Americans think is good for kids. The Pew survey found that 42 percent of adults think it is best for mom to work part time, while 16 percent say it?s ideal for mom to work full time.

The remaining approximately one-third of adults surveyed thought that it was best for mom to be home full time with the kids.

Judd for Kentucky? Not Yet, at Least for This Voter

Would Kentucky voters back Ashley Judd in a Senate race against Republican and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, should the actress choose to run? Yahoo News asked them for their thoughts. Here's one.

COMMENTARY | I'm a life-long Kentuckian and life-long independent, something which I do not recommend.

It's true, I dislike Mitch McConnell. I disagree with his political views, and I'm ashamed by his behavior. More importantly, I blame him and his party for the mind-numbing political gridlock in Washington.

However, would I vote for Judd? No, not yet anyway.

After hearing about her possible campaign in Kentucky on NPR, I attempted to find out more about her political views. And here is the entirety of what I found: She is passionate about women's rights and a woman's right to choose, she is a big Obama supporter, and she is an environmentalist.

Don't get me wrong. I agree with all of her views, but those political talking points constitute the entirety of Judd's political agenda. No plans, no meaningful speeches, and no depth.

Granted, this could easily be corrected during the course of her campaign; however, I refuse to blindly vote for someone simply because they are in the opposite party. After all, that's how Rand Paul got elected.

And anyway, exactly how does an environmentalist win in a mountain-top-removal coal-mining state?

Unannounced Motorola Android phone surfaces, isn't the fabled 'X phone' video

The fine folks at Tinhte have gotten their mitts on a Motorola-made Android phone that hasn't made its official debut. Right out of the gate, the outlet notes that it's not the rumored "X phone" since it's missing a large, stunning screen that would rival other flagship gear, but the specs still give it a fair amount of horsepower. Behind the device's roughly 4-inch 720p screen hide a Snapdragon S4 Pro (or better), an Adreno 320 GPU, 2GB of RAM and a 2,000mAh battery. On the outside, the smartphone sports a curved back reminiscent of the HTC One, a black finish and a thin bezel framing its display. Tinhte reports that the handset carries a XT912A model number, so we reckon it could be a cousin of the Droid RAZR, which is labeled as the XT912. Steubenville rape trial zeroes in on texts, video

Pool via AP

Jefferson County Deputy Sherriff A. Ellenberger, left, listens as prosecuting attorney Marianne Hemmeter asks questions during a rape trial?in juvenile court on Thursday in Steubenville, Ohio.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

Testimony in the rape trial that has shaken an Ohio steel town focused Thursday on text messages, pictures and cellphone video from the night that a 16-year-old girl claims she was assaulted by two star high school football players.

Investigators from the state crime lab and the local sheriff?s department talked about the forensics of recovering data from phones ? a technical hurdle that prosecutors have to clear before the people who sent and received the messages can testify.

The trial opened Wednesday and has cast a harsh spotlight on the town of Steubenville and its beloved Big Red football program. The boys are accused of raping the girl, who was drunk, last August during a night of victory parties.

Digital media will be critical in the trial. The case made national news because graphic cellphone photos and video, including a YouTube posting of a partygoer cracking jokes about the alleged rape, spread on social media.

The prosecution?s evidence includes a photo posted to Instagram of the two defendants, quarterback Trent Mays and wide receive Ma?Lik Richmond, carrying the girl out of a house by her arms and legs.

Mays is 17 and Richmond 16. If convicted, both could be jailed until they are 21.

Opening statements and testimony on Wednesday focused on how inebriated the girl was on the night of the attack. Prosecutor Marianne Hemmeter said that the girl was ?too impaired to say stop? and did not participate in the assault.

A 17-year-old girl who knows the accuser testified that she had never seen her friend so drunk. The defense attempted to show that the girl was making decisions that night and at one point told friends she was OK.
