Dominican groups reject gay US ambassador nominee

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) ? Religious groups in the Dominican Republic said Friday they are outraged by the nomination of a gay U.S. ambassador to the conservative Caribbean country.

James "Wally" Brewster would be the seventh U.S. ambassador in history to be openly gay, but opponents are asking the administration of Dominican President Danilo Medina to reject his nomination.

Rev. Cristobal Cardozo, leader of the Dominican Evangelical Fraternity, said he worried about the message that Brewster's presence might send.

"It's an insult to good Dominican customs," he said.

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez, president of the Conference of the Dominican Episcopate, echoed similar sentiments.

"You can expect anything from the U.S.," said Lopez, who is also the archbishop of Santo Domingo.

Meanwhile, Vicar Pablo Cedano criticized the nomination as "a lack of respect, of consideration, that they send us that kind of person as ambassador."

"If he arrives, he'll suffer and will be forced to leave," Cedano warned, without elaborating.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Daniel Foote said in a brief statement to reporters that Brewster was nominated because of his skills as an international businessman and his ideas on democracy and human rights.

"Brewster arrives as an ambassador, he's not coming here as an activist for the gay community," Foote said.

Local gay and lesbian activists condemned the outrage, saying the words of religious officials were filled with hate.

Nominating a gay man as ambassador should be viewed as normal, according to a statement by the umbrella nonprofit LGBT Collective.

The groups' stance "contrasts with the silence maintained by prelates and pastors when it comes to sexual assaults on children," said Leonardo Sanchez, of the nonprofit gay group Friends, Always Friends.

Officials with Medina's administration have declined to comment on the issue.

"It would be in bad taste for the state to comment on this nomination," said Cesar Pina, a judicial consultant to the presidency.

The debate comes as activists prepare for an annual gay pride parade scheduled for Sunday in the capital of Santo Domingo, which has hosted the parade for about a decade.

Brewster is currently a senior managing partner for the Chicago consulting firm SB&K Global. He also was a fundraiser for Obama and an inaugural committee contributor.

The Continued Mediocrity of Google Plus

?

Google may be the mother of all search engines, but when it comes to social skills, the company is still sorely lacking. If success in the social network stratosphere is measured by page views, time spent, and overall activity, Google+ can't hold a candle to Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest.

But while traditional metrics may not currently be kind to Google's two-year-old social offering, there just might be a silver lining.

With over 500 million profiles, there's no shortage of sign-ups and data; just frequency and overall time spent. Smart businesses, however, see Google+ not as a social mecca, but a SEO must-have. Since data on the social network is directly tied into Google's uber-popular search engine, there's plenty of big reasons every business should have at least a modest presence. But what will the future bring for Google+? Will it turn Facebook into the next MySpace, or will the SEO boon be its only true touted success?

The Cracks in the Armor
While it's fair to say the Google+ rollout has been slow and steady, two years is a long time to operate a massive social network without seeing any substantial successes. Signs that things are not as rosy as they could be lie in the staleness of content across the network. A look through the Google+ pages for major US brands shows a veritable graveyard of content. As an example, this last Cinco de Mayo, pizza giant Dominos launched a full scale marketing event on its Facebook page, complete with guacamole-themed pizza. A quick peek at their Google+ page showed content that hadn't been updated since October of 2012. You could almost hear the crickets chirping.

Cross-Section Bullets Are Beautiful for Something That Could Kill You

When it isn't being fired at or around you, ammunition can be kind of beautiful. We've already seen the striking beauty of exploding bullets trapped in plexiglass, but photographer Sabine Pearlman found a different, but equally awesome bullet-photography approach: cutting them in half.

Her photo series AMMO, conisists of shots of the innards of over 900 different types of ammunition, showing not only how carefully engineered and unique every different kind of bullet is, but also just how damn pretty they are up close.

Of course, there are more themes at play here than just "pretty bullets." The work's official description puts it this way:

Pearlman?s photographs blur our preconceptions by humanizing the tools of the shooter, showing us their simplicity and aesthetic balance, their serene arrangement of part. Yet, Pearlman?s work also acts to disarm the shooter. Cloven in two and isolated from their context, they are rendered harmless. The viewer is forced to contemplate them as abstractions. composed of shapes and angles, flecks of color and texture, devoid of use.

But even with all that said, I just can't get over how some of the explosive material looks a whole hell of a lot like Cocoa Pebbles.

You can catch more of Sabine's work over on her Facebook page, or check out her portfolio over at her website.

Boise Generals football in RMFL title game - without practice

Who needs practice? Not the undefeated Boise Generals semi-pro football team, which will play for the Rocky Mountain Football League's AA Championship game Saturday.

The Generals formed two years ago, organized by former Boise State wide receiver Jerry Smith (1999-2003). His first targets for the team: other former Broncos like Cam Hall, T.J. Acree and quarterback B.J. Rhode.

"Those BSU guys," Smith said, "I knew if we could get a couple of them we could build around that foundation."

The RMFL is semi-professional; a pay to play league. Roster turnover is typically pretty high. The Generals have experienced some of that, but built the team on a solid foundation of older, more experienced players.

"We're pretty proud of the guys who started and are still on the team right now," Rhode said.

That experience comes at a price. Professional and family life doesn't leave much time for football.

"We start in December, have a couple practices [before] Christmas," Rhode explained. "Then come back after the new year, have a couple practices."

Those preseason practices are on Saturdays. The team works in its foundation of plays and schemes in time for the first game - usually in early April - and then games take the place of practices.

"We got what we could get in, and it's go time," quipped Rhode.

Experience makes up for missed practice repetition, and if they can get their hands on game film, the Generals will meet one evening to break down tape of their opponents.

Thursday, less than a dozen offensive players pulled into camping chairs in Rhode's garage to look at tape of their championship game opponent.

"It's a crap-shoot, but this is what I think they're going to do," Rhode told players before he began breaking down Great Falls' defensive formations.

The former Bronco and Boise Burn quarterback, who teaches and coaches JV football at Eagle High School has thrown for almost 2,500 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2013. The Generals are the highest scoring team in the tri-state league, and didn't allow an opponent to score a single point until the seventh game of the season.

The RMFL 'AA' Championship game is Saturday, June 29 at Eagle High School's Thunder Stadium. Championship kickoff is at 7 p.m., preceded by a league all-star game at 3 p.m. Great Falls has won two of the last three league championships.

Firefox gets a new logo, rolls out desktop and Android Beta updates

Firefox gets a new logo, rolls out Beta update that gives devs access to its Social API

Firefox is an ever evolving beast, and that includes both its friendly orange fox logo, and its Beta channel browser. Today Mozilla unveiled the fourth Firefox logo, a (slightly) less textured and glossy icon for its favored web browser. Meanwhile, the latest update for for Firefox Beta brings access to the company's Social API and, consequently, Share buttons to the platform -- so Facebook fanatics can have one-click sharing of images, articles, videos and links from the Firefox toolbar. The new Beta is also getting a Mixed Content Blocker that prevents HTTP (read: nonsecure) content from loading on HTTPS websites. Plus, there's a new Network Monitor feature to let devs see how quickly individual page components load and optimizations for OS X 10.7 that enable its scrollbar style and and the scroll bounce behavior Apple fans love.

Oh, and for you mobile fans, the Android Beta was updated today, too. Now, it's got an auto-hide Awesome Bar, a URL autocomplete function and an updated RSS feed reader that allows you to add feeds to with a long press on the aforementioned Awesome Bar. Pretty awesome, gents, now let's get these Beta features into a full release, and it'll be really awesome.

Trapped in Transit: Orwellian Moscow airport hotel

SHEREMETYEVO AIRPORT (AP) ? "An interesting route, Mr. Phillips," says the airport transit desk employee. "This activity makes for suspicion."

It was the start of an Orwellian adventure in which I deliberately got myself sequestered in the hopes of finding Edward Snowden at Moscow's main airport.

The experience leaves me feeling that if the NSA leaker is indeed in the transit zone of the airport, as President Vladimir Putin claims, he may already have a taste of what it's like to be in prison.

Snowden is possibly holed up in the wing of an airport hotel reserved for travelers in transit who don't have visas to enter Russia. The Novotel's main building, located outside the airport, has a plush lobby with a fountain, a trendy bar and luxury shops. One wing, however, lies within the airport's transit zone ? a kind of international limbo that is not officially Russian territory.

And that's where Snowden, whose U.S. passport has been revoked, may be hiding.

___

EDITOR'S NOTE: Eastern Europe News Director Ian Phillips flew from his home base of Prague in the Czech Republic to Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport with the goal of getting to the bottom of the mystery of fugitive NSA leaker Edward Snowden. What followed was a surreal 21 hours.

___

The woman at the transit desk raises an eyebrow and stares at my flight itinerary, which includes a 21-hour layover in Moscow before a connection to Ukraine. "Why would ANYONE stay here in transit for so long? There are so many earlier connections you could have taken. This is strange behavior."

After a nearly two-hour wait inside the terminal, a bus picks me up ? only me ? from the transit area. We drive slowly across the tarmac, through a barrier, past electronic gates covered in barbed wire and security cameras.

The main part of the Novotel is out of bounds. My allotted wing feels like a lockup: You are obliged to stay in your room, except for brief walks along the corridor. Three cameras track your movements along the hallway and beam the images back to a multiscreen monitor. It's comforting to see a sign instructing me that, in case of an emergency, the locks on heavily fortified doors leading to the elevators will open.

When I try to leave my room, the guard outside springs to his feet. I ask him why room service isn't responding and if there's any other way to get food. He growls: "Extension 70!" I rile him by asking about the Wi-Fi, which isn't working: "Extension 75!" he snarls.

"Don't worry, Mr. Phillips," the transit desk employee had said. "We have all your details and information. We will come and get you from your room at 6 p.m. on Friday, one hour before your connecting flight."

Now it's midnight, and I'm getting edgy. I feel trapped inside my airless room, whose double windows are tightly sealed. And the room is extortionate: It costs $300 a night, with a surcharge of 50 percent slapped on because I will be staying past noon.

("Can't I just wait in the lobby after midday?" I asked the receptionist at check-in. "Of course not," she retorted. "You have no visa. You will stay until you are picked up.")

I look out the window. If Snowden is here and has the same view, he can see the approach to the departures terminal at the airport. A large billboard shows a red 4x4 vehicle driving along an ocean road. A parking lot below is filled with vehicles. A man in green overalls is watering a patch of parched grass. Vehicles whizz in and out of the airport.

A maid has just brought a tea bag. She puts a tick against the room number on the three-page document on her trolley. On it, there are no guest names, only numbers ? and departure dates. A quick look suggests there are perhaps a few dozen people staying here. A couple of rooms on my floor have tell-tale signs of occupancy ? food trays lying outside from the night before.

But no sign of Snowden.

The guard allows me to stretch my legs in the corridor. The signs on the wall rub things in. Under a pretty picture of the Moscow skyline and Red Square, a message reads: "Should you wish to see the full range of facilities offered by our hotel during your next stay, we strongly recommend you to get a visa before flying to Moscow."

A fleeting glimpse of a possible change of scene: a set of guidelines posted on the wall say I can go out for a smoke!

Rule No. 6: "It is possible to go and smoke one time per hour for 5 minutes in the beginning of each hour escorted by security service."

I don't smoke, but this would be a way to escape this floor. But when I ask him to take me down, the security guard scoffs. "No!" he says flatly.

I call the front desk. "You need a visa to go outside and smoke, Mr. Phillips" the receptionist says.

If he's here, Snowden has access to a few international TV stations. He also has a fair amount of options with room service ? the only source of food in this wing. But after almost a week, he might be getting bored. And he'd need a credit card or a lot of Russian cash. A selection:

Buffalo mozzarella and pesto dressing starter? 720 rubles (about $20).

Ribeye steak: 1,500 rubles (about $50).

Bottle of Brunello di Montalcino red wine: 5,280 rubles ($165).

A miniature bottle of Hennessy XO cognac: 2,420 rubles ($80).

I've called all the 37 rooms on my floor in hopes of reaching Snowden. No reply except for when I get my security guard.

The floor above? A similarly futile attempt.

I only reach a handful of tired and irritated Russians who growl "Da? Da? Da?" ? "Yes? Yes? Yes?"

Flying the Friendly Skies with Pets | Full Circle Veterinary Alternatives

These days, more and more people are travelling by air with their pets.? ?If you are considering this there are a few things you should know.

First of all, not all airlines allow pets, so before booking your flight make sure that the airline is indeed pet friendly and that they know your pet is flying with you.? There are often additional charges for your pet and there are only a small number of pets allowed on each flight.? You may not be able to wait for that last minute seat sale?- you might get a spot, but your pet may not!

dog-in-carrier-on-planeIf your pet is small enough it may be able to travel in the cabin with you. ?In this case your dog or cat must fit into a carrier that is able to fit under the seat in front of you. Check with your airline to find out the dimensions of the carriers they allow and be willing to put up with a bit less foot room.

If your dog is larger and must travel in the cargo area then ensure that you have an approved transport crate and that your pet is accustomed to travelling in it. Crates must be large enough to allow your dog to stand, sit, turn around and lie down in a natural position.? It must be solid sided, have adequate ventilation and it must have a leak-proof? bottom.? Label the crate with your name, address, and contact phone number.? Having your flight number and destination on the label is also a good idea.

Don?t forget to have a leash handy at the airport since you often have to remove your dog from the crate so that the crate can be put through the x-ray scanner.? But before even entering the terminal, don?t forget the last minute potty break for Buster.? There are no lavatories in cargo!lemmikloomad

Always try to book non stop flights and consider the time of year that you are travelling.? Fly in early morning or late evening in the summer months and try to travel mid day in the winter.

Many airlines require that your pet be examined by your Veterinarian within 10 days of flying and that they have issued a health certificate.? If you are travelling internationally make sure that you have the correct paperwork to allow your pet entry into the country.? Many countries have strict guidelines that may require special testing, vaccinations or paperwork to be filed out?so look into this far in advance. If not there may not be enough time to get results, special import certificates, etc, prior to your travel date.

Happy Flying!!

Research raises concerns over smoke detectors' effectiveness in waking children

June 27, 2013 ? Standard domestic smoke detectors may not always wake children in the event of a fire, according to research by the University of Strathclyde's Centre for Forensic Science and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The study of 34 children -20 girls and 14 boys- aged between two and 13, found that 80% slept through smoke detector alarms. Each child was tested six times and only seven of the children woke during any of the tests.

Only two children woke on every occasion and none of the 14 boys in the research woke at all.

While the findings do not call into question the value of smoke alarms in alerting people to fires, nor their capacity to help save lives, the fact that the children failed so often to wake up on the activation of the alarms does raise concerns.

Professor Niamh Nic Daeid, of Strathclyde's Centre for Forensic Science, who led the research said 'While the results of this study remain preliminary given the number of children involved, they do highlight concerns that cannot be ignored about the effectiveness of smoke detectors in waking children."

"Further research is required to build on the findings to date and investigate robust solutions to the issues highlighted."

Dave Coss, East Midlands Regional Fire Investigation Dog Handler and Watch Manager with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, conducted the study as part of his Masters degree taken at the University of Strathclyde.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service reinforces the importance of having a working smoke alarm on every level of the home and that the research finding emphasise the importance of having a pre-planned and practised escape route or plan that everyone in the home, whether a family member or overnight guest, is aware of. This plan must account for waking, alerting and evacuating all children in the home.

The Service also continues to campaign and work towards domestic sprinklers being fitted into all new domestic dwellings and retrofitted into the homes of those most vulnerable to fire, as and where appropriate.

Pakistan to start treason probe of Musharraf

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's prime minister ordered officials Wednesday to begin a treason investigation into ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf, bringing the government closer to putting the former army chief on trial.

The case sets up a possible clash between the government and Pakistan's powerful army, a worrisome prospect in a country that has a history of military coups. Musharraf could face life in prison or the death penalty if he is charged and convicted of treason.

The government told the Supreme Court on Monday that Musharraf, who seized power in a military coup in 1999, should be put on trial for allegedly committing treason while in office. The government specifically cited his decision to declare a state of emergency and suspend the constitution in 2007.

The Supreme Court ordered the government to notify the judges by Wednesday of the steps it would take to try Musharraf and scheduled a hearing for the following day to hear the government's response.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Wednesday in a written reply to the court that the government would constitute a special team to investigate Musharraf for treason under Article 6 of the constitution. Following the completion of the investigation, the government will file the "requisite complaint" against Musharraf and constitute the special court required to try him for treason.

Imaur Rehman, a lawyer who has been critical of Musharraf, described the government's decision to open an investigation as a "bold step."

"Today's government decision should be seen as the first serious step toward holding Musharraf's trial on treason charges," said Rehman.

But another lawyer, Ghulam Nabi, cautioned that the government could use the investigation as a way to delay the case and avoid a confrontation with the army, which is considered the strongest institution in the country.

"I think the investigation officer, who will be appointed by the government, will take months to complete his work, and we don't know whether the officer would come up with enough evidence required to punish Musharraf," said Nabi.

Sadiqul Farooq, a spokesman for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N party, said the government was determined to put Musharraf on trial for treason.

"No one should have any doubt in his or her mind about the intention of the government in putting Musharraf on trial for treason under Article 6 of the constitution," said Farooq. "The prime minister believes in the rule of law, and he thinks no one is above the law."

The case is personal for Sharif since he was serving as prime minister in 1999 when Musharraf carried out his coup. Musharraf ruled for nearly a decade but was forced to step down in 2008 because of growing public discontent. He spent years in exile before returning to the country in March.

The case is also personal for many judges and lawyers throughout Pakistan. Musharraf sacked the chief justice of the Supreme Court and other senior judges when he declared a state of emergency in 2007. He was forced to step down after lawyers across the country launched a protest movement against his actions.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan to run in the national election held in May but was disqualified from participating in the vote because of his actions while in office. He has spent most of his time battling legal cases and is currently under house arrest on the outskirts of Islamabad because of a separate case against him.

Musharraf can only be tried for treason if the federal government files charges against him. The caretaker government that ruled the country in the run-up to the May elections declined to bring charges, saying it was outside their mandate.

Many analysts speculated that Musharraf would be allowed to leave before the Sharif government took power earlier this month to avoid a confrontation with the army, but that didn't happen.

The army advised Musharraf not to return to the country because it was also worried about a confrontation, but the former military ruler ignored the advice. Even though the army was against his return, many analysts doubt the generals would be willing to let Musharraf be convicted for treason and could intervene to prevent it from happening.

Musharraf would be the first army chief put on trial for treason in a country that has experienced three military coups in its nearly 66-year history.

Analysts have speculated that a treason case against Musharraf could also ensnare many other officials who were in power when he declared a state of emergency in 2007.

Also Wednesday, a bomb targeting a senior judge in the southern city of Karachi wounded him and killed seven members of the security forces, said Sharjeel Memon, information minister for southern Sindh province. The explosion also wounded 15 people, he said.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack on the judge, Maqbool Baqir, saying he was taking decisions against the militants and Islamic law.

Ireland to pay $45M to Catholic laundry workers

DUBLIN (AP) -- Ireland will pay several hundred former residents of Catholic-run Magdalene laundries at least 34.5 million euros ($45 million) to compensate them for their years of unpaid labor and public shame, the government announced Wednesday following a decade-long campaign by former residents of the workhouses.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter apologized to the women ? an estimated 770 survivors out of more than 10,000 who lived in the dozen facilities from the 1920s to 1996 ? that it had taken so long for them to receive compensation. The move marked the latest step in a two-decade effort by Ireland to investigate and redress the human rights abuses in Catholic institutions.

In remarks to former Magdalenes, some of them in the press-conference audience, Shatter said he hoped they would accept the government's compensation plans as "a sincere expression of the state's regret for failing you in the past, its recognition of your current needs, and its commitment to respecting your dignity and human rights as full, equal members of our nation."

Shatter said the total cost of payments could reach 58 million euros ($75.5 million) if the maximum number of eligible women worldwide applies. The tax-free payments would range from 11,500 euros ($15,000), for women who spent less than three months working in a laundry, to up to 100,000 euros ($130,000) for those who spent 10 years or more there.

Shatter said the women also would receive state-funded retirement pensions and free medical care at state-funded facilities.

Activists representing the so-called "Maggies" had demanded justice and state compensation since 2002, when a previous government launched a compensation fund for people who had suffered abuse in Catholic-run orphanages and workhouses for children but declared former Magdalene residents ineligible ? contending that the laundries were privately run institutions with negligible state involvement.

The government since has paid more than 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) to more than 13,000 people who suffered sexual, physical and psychological abuse in the children's residences. A government-commissioned investigation in February found that the state was legally responsible for overseeing the laundries, too, and Prime Minister Enda Kenny offered an official apology.

Wall Street to climb at open on central bank comments

By Chuck Mikolajczak

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were poised for a higher open on Tuesday, indicating the S&P 500 may stem its recent slide after comments from central bankers in the U.S. and China eased recent concerns about a credit crunch and an end to stimulus measures.

The People's Bank of China said it would not press banks too greatly in its efforts to curb easy credit as it sought to ease worries of a possible banking crisis.

The S&P 500 on Monday closed at its lowest level since April 22 after China's central bank said the country's banks need to do a better job of managing their cash and due to continued worries about a reduction in stimulus measures from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

But equities pared losses late in the session after two Fed officials downplayed the notion of an imminent end to monetary stimulus. The benchmark S&P index has fallen 4.8 percent since the Fed signaled last week that it may begin to lessen stimulus should its economic forecasts hold true, including a 1.4 percent drop the day of the announcement.

"Equities have had a healthy pullback. Ultimately, the Fed exit should be good for equities but it's going to be a difficult transition," said Troy Gayeski, Partner and Senior Portfolio Manager at SkyBridge Capital in New York.

Adding support was data showing durable goods orders increased 3.6 percent in May, above the 3 percent forecast, the latest signs of a pick-up in economic activity.

S&P 500 futures rose 12 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures gained 92 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 21.75 points.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of house prices in 20 metropolitan areas gained 1.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping forecasts for 1.2 percent, indicating the housing recovery continues to gain momentum.

New home sales data for May is expected along with June consumer confidence at 10 a.m. (1400 GMT). Economists in a Reuters survey forecast home sales at a total of 462,000 annualized units compared with 454,000 in April. Consumer confidence is expected to show a reading of 75.4 against the 76.2 announced in May.

Lennar Corp climbed 4.6 percent to $36.60 in premarket trade after the No. 3 U.S. homebuilder reported a 53 percent jump in quarterly revenue as it sold more homes at higher prices, and said orders rose 27 percent.

Walgreen Co fell 6.4 percent to $45 in premarket trade after reporting weaker-than-expected results, citing slow front-end sales and a challenging economy.

Barnes & Noble Inc slumped 10.2 percent to $16.90 before the opening bell after the largest U.S. bookstore chain reported its quarterly net loss more than doubled.

Dog buries puppy in Iraq: Why is this video so popular? (+video)

Dog buries puppy: A video of a dog compassionately burying a puppy in Iraq has gone viral. Why?

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / June 25, 2013

A video of a dog compassionately burying a dead puppy has gone viral. That the video garners such attention among humans is perhaps a reflection on how we see the world ? as much as the how a canine in mourning behaves.

In the video, whose title translates from Arabic to ?dog buries his son in Iraq,? a dog gently sniffs the puppy ? found in a ditch with empty water bottles ? then proceeds to tenderly bury it, nudging with his nose the sand and dirt over the little body. In the background, three men talk inaudibly in Arabic while the dog works and then call out, in English, ?thank you very much? as the dog finishes and leaves.?

The video does not give any other information about the scene, such as where exactly it was shot, who took the video, the relationship between the two dogs, or how the puppy died.

The video, posted last week to YouTube, has since gone viral. There?s nothing that web audiences like more than animals behaving like people, especially when that animal is replicating our kindest, most selfless practices. Last month, an Oklahoma zoo captured a lion and a puppy "kissing."? Last year, a video of a dog assuming maternal duties for an abandoned kitten also went viral, as did another video of a dog trying to push a dog that a car had just hit and killed out of a road. Other videos of dogs standing sentry at the graves of their owners or crying for deceased animal friends have also made the Internet rounds.

Humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize the animal kingdom. But these videos arguably offer a portrait of a moral animal who embodies the best in human behavior.

"Grief is one of the basic emotions dogs experience, just like people, Dr. Sophia Yin, a San Francisco-based veterinarian and applied animal behaviorist, told HealthDay.com. Dogs also feel fear, happiness, sadness, anger, as well as possessiveness.

While dogs do experience emotion, the recognizable behavior through which dogs express that emotion is probably learned from humans, say some scientists. Studies have found that dogs have an extraordinary capacity to learn and mimic human behavior.?Two years ago,?researchers found?that dogs learn from their owner?s facial cues to perform good behavior when their owner is watching and to save the misbehavior until their owner?s back is turned, like a wised-up child pilfering from the cookie jar.

Does that mean this dog in Iraq learned from its owners how to mourn the loss of a child? We don't know. Certainly, Iraq has been a venue for some of the worst in human behavior in recent years. But the fact that "even dogs" can express compassion is perhaps why we respond so well to such videos: They are encouraging, hopeful reminders that such actions are natural to all beings, including humans.

Durable goods orders rise, house prices jump

By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rose more than expected in May and a gauge of planned business spending increased for a third straight month, the latest signs of a pick-up in economic activity.

The growth picture was further brightened by other data on Tuesday showing existing single-family home prices recorded their biggest gain in seven years in April. The housing market recovery is softening the blow on the economy from tight fiscal policy.

The reports suggested the economy was pulling out of a soft patch hit early in the second quarter and they were supportive of the Federal Reserve's view that risks to the economy's outlook have lessened.

Durable goods orders increased 3.6 percent as demand for goods ranging from aircraft to machinery rose, the Commerce Department said. Orders for these goods, which range from toasters to aircraft, had risen 3.6 percent in April.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected orders to rise 3.0 percent last month. Orders excluding transportation increased 0.7 percent after advancing 1.7 percent in April.

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending plans, increased 1.1 percent. Orders for the so-called core capital goods had increased 1.2 percent in April and economists had expected a 0.3 percent gain last month.

"It points to further upside momentum for business capital investment activity," said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

"It also signals increased confidence among the business community about the sustainability of the economic recovery - which could itself become self-fulfilling."

Core capital goods shipments, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the gross domestic product report, rebounded 1.7 percent. That followed a 2.0 percent drop in April.

The increase in shipments of core capital goods pointed to moderate growth in business spending on capital equipment.

A separate report showed the S&P/Case Shiller home price composite index of 20 metropolitan areas increased 1.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in April.

Prices in the 20 cities accelerated 12.1 percent from a year ago, largest rise since March 2006.

U.S. stock index futures rose on the data, while prices for U.S. Treasury debt fell. The dollar rose against the euro.

HOUSING BOOSTS CONFIDENCE

"Home prices going up is very important for consumer confidence," said Neil Dutta, head of U.S. economics at Renaissance Macro Research in New York. "A recovery in home prices is exponentially more important than the recent pullback in stock prices."

The housing recovery has been marked by declines in the inventory of homes for sale and soaring prices, helping to boost consumer confidence and making Americans less fearful about spending on big-ticket items.

It is also lifting revenues for builders like Lennar Corp, the No. 3 U.S. homebuilder. Lennar reported a stronger-than-expected 53 percent rise in second quarter revenue on Tuesday.

"Our second-quarter results together with real-time feedback from our field associates continue to point towards a solid housing recovery," Chief Executive Stuart Miller said in a statement on Tuesday.

Gains in housing are also supporting factories, despite a slowdown in global demand.

Manufacturing output ticked up in May and regional factory surveys released so far have shown some strength in June.

Last month, demand for transportation equipment rose 10.2 percent, buoyed by a surge in orders for civilian aircraft.

Boeing received orders for 232 aircraft, up from 51 in April, according to information posted on its website. Orders for motor vehicles, however, fell 1.2 percent after rising 2.4 percent.

Outside transportation there were gains in orders for machinery, computers and electronic products, primary metals and electrical equipment, appliances and components.

Other details of the report we also supportive of manufacturing. Unfilled orders for durable goods rose 0.8 percent and were up by the same margin excluding transportation. Overall shipments of durable goods rebounded 1.2 percent after falling 0.6 percent in April.

Stocks of unsold durable goods edged up 0.1 percent, which should help the sector in the long run.

'Playboy' Paul Giamatti joins 'Downton Abbey'

TV

Image: Paul Giamatti

Paul Giamatti.

There was a time when Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) was the lone Yank on "Downton Abbey," but those days are long gone.

Last season, her mother, Martha (Shirley MacLaine), arrived on the scene -- much to the displeasure of the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) -- and next season, the American invasion will continue.

The next non-Brit on his way to the Abbey is Cora's brother, and if Lady Violet cringed at every Americanism out of Martha's mouth, she's bound to be positively apoplectic about Harold, as played by the oh-so-modern American Paul Giamatti.

Yes, that's right. The man who once played Kenny "Pig Vomit" Rushton in Howard Stern's "Private Parts" is joining the show.

At first the actor might seem like an odd fit for the "Dowton" ensemble, but fans can take heart. Giamatti already mastered the art of the perfect period piece performance in HBO's "John Adams," for which he won an Emmy, and it's not like he'll be channeling any of his past crude, nerdy or neurotic on-screen personas for his "Downton" role. In fact, according to TVLine, Giamatti's Harold is a "maverick, playboy" type.

Executive producer Gareth Neame told TVLine that Harold would be "free spirited," and that he -- along with mom Martha -- holds the promise of upsetting "the Grantham apple cart" by the end of season four.

But there's still a long wait for the beginning of season four -- at least for Harold's fellow Americans. "Downton Abbey" returns to PBS Jan. 5, 2014.

Lebanon clashes rage near mosque; 16 soldiers dead

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese army units battled followers of a hard-line Sunni cleric holed up in a mosque complex in a southern port city on Monday, the second day of fighting that has left at least 16 soldiers dead, the military said.

The clashes in Sidon, Lebanon's third-largest city some 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Beirut, are the latest bout of violence in Lebanon linked to the conflict in neighboring Syria.

They are the bloodiest yet involving the army ? at least two of those killed are officers. The Lebanese media has depicted the clashes as a test for the state in containing armed groups that have taken up the cause of the warring sides in Syria, whose sectarian makeup mirrors that of its smaller neighbor.

The two days of fighting between troops and armed supporters of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir have transformed the city, which had been largely spared the violence plaguing border areas near Syria, into a combat zone.

The National News Agency said the clashes also left fifty wounded. Hospital officials said at least three of al-Assir's supporters died in the fighting.

The military in a statement said the gunmen were using the religious compound to fire on its troops and had taken civilians as shields.

Machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenade explosions caused panic among residents of Sidon. Residents reported power and water outage.

The city streets appeared largely deserted Monday. Local media reported many residents were asking for evacuation from the heavily populated neighborhood around the Bilal bin Rabbah Mosque where al-Assir preaches, and where the fighting has been concentrated. The local municipality said that the city is "a war zone," appealing for a cease-fire to evacuate the civilians and wounded in the area.

Many people living on upper floors came down or fled to safer areas, while others were seen running away from fighting areas carrying children. Others remained locked up in their homes or shops, fearing getting caught in the crossfire. Gray smoke billowed over parts of the city.

The military appealed to the gunmen to hand themselves in. In its statement, it said that it "reassures all Lebanese that it will continue to uproot the strife and will not stop its operations until security is totally restored to the city and its boroughs, and falls under the rule of law and order."

The clashes erupted Sunday in the predominantly Sunni city after troops arrested a follower of al-Assir. The army says supporters of the cleric opened fire without provocation on an army checkpoint.

Al-Assir is a virulent critic of the powerful Shiite militant Hezbollah group, which along with its allies dominates Lebanon's government. He supports rebels fighting to oust Syria's President Bashar Assad.

A few Hezbollah supporters in the city were briefly drawn into the fight Sunday, firing on al-Assir's supporters. At least one was killed, according to his relatives in the city who spoke anonymously out of concerns for their security.

But the group appeared to be staying largely out of the ongoing clashes. Last week, al-Assir supporters fought with pro-Hezbollah gunmen, leaving two killed.

Early Monday, al-Assir appealed to his supporters through his Twitter account in other parts of Lebanon to rise to his help, threatening to widen the scale of clashes.

The tweets did not give a clear statement on how the battle began. It came after a series of incidents pitting the cleric's followers against other groups in the town, including Hezbollah supporters and the army.

The cleric is believed to have hundreds of armed supporters in Sidon involved in the fighting. Dozens of al-Assir's gunmen also partially shut down the main highway linking south Lebanon with Beirut. On Monday, they opened fire in other parts of the city, with local media reporting gunshots in the city's market.

Fighting also broke out in parts of Ein el-Hilweh, a teeming Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon, where al-Assir has supporters. Islamist factions inside the camp lobbed mortars at military checkpoints around the camp. Tension also spread to the north in Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city. Masked gunmen roamed the city center, firing in the air and forcing shops and businesses to shut down in solidarity with al-Assir. Dozens of gunmen also set fire to tires, blocking roads. The city's main streets were emptying out. There was no unusual military or security deployment.

Sectarian clashes in Lebanon tied to the Syrian conflict have intensified in recent weeks, especially after Hezbollah sent fighters to support Assad's forces. Most of the rebels fighting to topple Assad are from Syria's Sunni majority, while the President Bashar Assad belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Walid al-Moallem, Syria's foreign minister, blamed the violence in Lebanon on the international decision to arm rebels, saying that it will only serve to prolong the fighting in Syria and will impact neighboring Lebanon.

"What is going in Sidon is very dangerous, very dangerous," he told reporters in Damascus. "We warned since the start that the impact of what happens in Syria on neighboring countries will be grave."

In Syria, activists reported fighting Monday between Syrian troops and rebels in the northern province of Aleppo as well as districts on the edge of the Syrian capital and its suburbs.

Clashes in Lebanon have also mostly pitted Sunni against Shiite. The most frequent outbreaks have involved rival neighborhoods in the northern port city of Tripoli, close to the Syrian border.

President Michel Suleiman called for an emergency security meeting later Monday.

Headlines of Lebanon's newspapers were all dominated by the violence in Sidon, with many seeing it as a test for the state to impose order. "An attempt to assassinate Sidon and the military," read the headline of the daily al-Safir. "Al-Assir crosses the red line," read another headline in al-Jomhouria daily. A third headline in al-Nahar read: "Yesterday war in Sidon. Today, decisiveness or settlement?"

Development of nonvolatile liquid anthracenes for facile full-color luminescence tuning: Application to foldable light-emitting devices expected

June 23, 2013 ? A research team headed by Dr. Takashi Nakanishi, a Principal Researcher of the NIMS Organic Materials Group, Polymer Materials Unit, developed a full-colour tunable luminescent liquid material with excellent light stability based on an anthracene molecule, which is a general organic fluorescent dye.

A research team headed by Dr. Takashi Nakanishi, a Principal Researcher of the Organic Materials Group (Group Leader: Masayuki Takeuchi), Polymer Materials Unit (Unit Director: Izumi Ichinose) of the National Institute for Materials Science (President: Sukekatsu Ushioda), developed a full-colour tunable luminescent liquid material with excellent photostability based on anthracene, which is a general organic fluorescent dye.

In the development of full-colour display monitors, mobile devices, and other electronic devices, organic molecular and polymer materials are essentially important, as they offer advantages such as light weight, flexibility, and printability. However, in virtually all cases, the light-emitting organic molecular materials developed until now have had difficulties to demonstrate their inherent luminescent performance due to various problems, which include low photostability (durability to prevent discoloration or decolorization under photoirradiation) and aggregation of molecules in the coating process. Moreover, from the viewpoint of production of flexible devices, materials should be free of deterioration of the continuous emissive layer, even when subjected to excessive bending and folding. On the other hand, development of organic molecular materials which enable simple, low-cost manufacture of full-colour luminescence devices, in comparison with individual synthesis of organic molecular materials that display various luminescent colours, is also desired.

The team led by Dr. Nakanishi developed a blue-emitting liquid material which is free of aggregation among adjacent anthracene parts, has a melting point of approximately -60 ?C, and is thermally stable up to about 300 ?C, by attaching highly flexible branched alkyl chains around an anthracene core moiety, which is a fluorescent general dye molecule. This material is a low-viscosity liquid with viscosity of approximately 0.3 Pa-s at room temperature and is a blue-emitting with an absolute fluorescence quantum yield of ca. 55% and photostable more than 5~10 times longer lifetime than that of commercially-available anthracene dyes. Furthermore, because other luminescent dye molecules can be doped homogeneously in this liquid, it was found that full-colour luminescence tuning is available assisted by up to 96% fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) of dyes by single blue-light (365nm) excitation.

In this research, a blue-emitting anthracene liquid with excellent photostability was synthesized, and a liquid material which displays high quality full-colour luminescence and precise luminescence tuning by the facile operation of doping the liquid with other dyes was developed. Since the nonvolatile liquid material developed in this work can be coated on the surface of various substrates, production of organic multicolour devices with stable single color excitation can be expected. A continuous active emitting layer can be maintained, without breaking or interruption even when bent and folded, which is a favorable property for the development of foldable flexible devices.

(AP) ? Was Kanye West inspired by One Direction?

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West named their daughter North West, according to their Los Angeles County birth certificate. The baby was born at 5:34 a.m. Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

North is certainly not the first celebrity baby with an unorthodox name ? and plenty of those names have set trends. Brooklyn may have seemed exotic when Victoria and David Beckham chose it in 1999, but last year it was the 29th most popular baby name in the U.S., according to the Social Security Administration. (Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz's choice of another New York borough, Bronx, remains less popular.)

North has not cracked the Social Security Administration's top 1000 baby names over the past 100 years, though West ranked 949 for boys in the year 1913. But given the popularity of place names ? Paris, London, Sydney and Savannah were also in the top 100 for girls ? perhaps we can expect more babies with a sense of direction in years to come.

Here are some other unusual celebrity offspring names:

? Aleph, son of Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied

? Apple and Moses, children of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin

? Banjo Patrick, son of actress Rachel Griffiths

? Bear Blu, son of actress Alicia Silverstone

? Blue Ivy, daughter of Beyonce and Jay-Z

Inside WWE's massive video vault

WWE owns, quite simply, the largest library of professional wrestling content in the world.

Since buying out WCW in 2001, the titan of sports-entertainment has acquired the tape libraries of major promotions, including ECW, AWA, World Class Championship Wrestling, Championship Wrestling from Florida, Smoky Mountain Wrestling and many others. But who is responsible for curating this priceless collection? How is it organized and stored?

Check out photos of The Fink and WWEClassics.com taking a trip deep inside the library

Bryan Staffaroni is WWE?s Director of Media Technology. In this role, he is responsible for the massive undertaking of digitally archiving each and every match that WWE owns.

?Whether it was a WCW Nitro episode or some MSG show from back in the day ? if it aired, we ingested it in that project,? Staffaroni explained.

As WWE?s Director of Asset Management, George Germanakos oversees the content of what is currently owned, while also keeping an eye on what independent libraries WWE might be interested in acquiring in the future.

?When someone in the company is looking for a certain piece of footage, they?ll come to me,? Germanakos said. ?Whether it is years, dates, venues, names, whatever they need. Call my department up and we?ll get that information and that footage.?

Together, these two men allow the WWE Universe to consume rare wrestling footage and also provide the information needed for historical video packages seen on WWE programming today. On a rainy June day, WWEClassics.com and WWE Hall of Famer Howard Finkel were given a tour of WWE?s top-secret tape library and storage facility. Join us to discover what we found inside.

Federal nullification efforts mounting in states

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Imagine the scenario: A federal agent attempts to arrest someone for illegally selling a machine gun. Instead, the federal agent is arrested ? charged in a state court with the crime of enforcing federal gun laws.

Farfetched? Not as much as you might think.

The scenario would become conceivable if legislation passed by Missouri's Republican-led Legislature is signed into law by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

The Missouri legislation is perhaps the most extreme example of a states' rights movement that has been spreading across the nation. States are increasingly adopting laws that purport to nullify federal laws ? setting up intentional legal conflicts, directing local police not to enforce federal laws and, in rare cases, even threatening criminal charges for federal agents who dare to do their jobs.

An Associated Press analysis found that about four-fifths of the states now have enacted local laws that directly reject or ignore federal laws on marijuana use, gun control, health insurance requirements and identification standards for driver's licenses. The recent trend began in Democratic leaning California with a 1996 medical marijuana law and has proliferated lately in Republican strongholds like Kansas, where Gov. Sam Brownback this spring became the first to sign a measure threatening felony charges against federal agents who enforce certain firearms laws in his state.

Some states, such as Montana and Arizona, have said "no" to the feds again and again ? passing states' rights measures on all four subjects examined by the AP ? despite questions about whether their "no" carries any legal significance.

"It seems that there has been an uptick in nullification efforts from both the left and the right," said Adam Winkler, a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles who specializes in constitutional law.

Yet "the law is clear ? the supremacy clause (of the U.S. Constitution) says specifically that the federal laws are supreme over contrary state laws, even if the state doesn't like those laws," Winkler added.

The fact that U.S. courts have repeatedly upheld federal laws over conflicting state ones hasn't stopped some states from flouting those federal laws ? sometimes successfully.

About 20 states now have medical marijuana laws allowing people to use pot to treat chronic pain and other ailments ? despite a federal law that still criminalizes marijuana distribution and possession. Ceding ground to the states, President Barack Obama's administration has made it known to federal prosecutors that it wasn't worth their time to target those people.

Federal authorities have repeatedly delayed implementation of the 2005 Real ID Act, an anti-terrorism law that set stringent requirements for photo identification cards to be used to board commercial flights or enter federal buildings. The law has been stymied, in part, because about half the state legislatures have opposed its implementation, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

About 20 states have enacted measures challenging Obama's 2010 health care laws, many of which specifically reject the provision mandating that most people have health insurance or face tax penalties beginning in 2014.

After Montana passed a 2009 law declaring that federal firearms regulations don't apply to guns made and kept in that state, eight other states have enacted similar laws. Gun activist Gary Marbut said he crafted the Montana measure as a foundation for a legal challenge to the federal power to regulate interstate commerce under the U.S. Constitution. His lawsuit was dismissed by a trial judge but is now pending before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

"The states created this federal monster, and so it's time for the states to get their monster on a leash," said Marbut, president of the Montana Shooting Sports Association.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1997 that local police could not be compelled to carry out provisions of a federal gun control law. But some states are now attempting to take that a step further by asserting that certain federal laws can't even be enforced by federal authorities.

A new Kansas law makes it a felony for a federal agent to attempt to enforce laws on guns made and owned in Kansas. A similar Wyoming law, passed in 2010, made it a misdemeanor. The Missouri bill also would declare it a misdemeanor crime but would apply more broadly to all federal gun laws and regulations ? past, present, or future ? that "infringe on the people's right to keep and bear arms."

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder sent a letter in late April to the Kansas governor warning that the federal government is willing to go to court over the new law.

"Kansas may not prevent federal employees and officials from carrying out their official responsibilities," Holder wrote.

Federal authorities in the western district of Missouri led the nation in prosecutions for federal weapons offenses through the first seven months of the 2013 fiscal year, with Kansas close behind, according to a data clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

Felons illegally possessing firearms is the most common charge nationally. But the Missouri measure sets it sights on nullifying federal firearms registrations and, among other things, a 1934 law that imposes a tax on transferring machine guns or silencers. Last year, the federal government prosecuted 83 people nationally for unlawful possession of machine guns.

So what would happen if a local prosecutor actually charges a federal agent for doing his or her job?

"They're going to have problems if they do it ? there's no doubt about it," said Michael Boldin, executive director of the Tenth Amendment Center, a Los Angeles-based entity that promotes states' rights. "There's no federal court in the country that's going to say that a state can pull this off."

Yet states may never need to prosecute federal agents in order to make their point.

If enough states resist, "it's going to be very difficult for the federal government to force their laws down our throats," Boldin said.

Missouri's governor has not said whether he will sign or veto the bill nullifying federal gun laws. Meanwhile, thousands of people have sent online messages to the governor's office about the legislation.

Signing the measure "will show other states how to resist the tyranny of federal bureaucrats who want to rob you of your right to self-defense," said one message, signed by Jim and Arlena Sowash, who own a gun shop in rural Stover, Mo.

Others urged a veto.

"Outlandish bills like this ? completely flouting our federal system ? make Missouri the laughingstock of the nation," said a message written by Ann Havelka, of the Kansas City suburb of Gladstone.
